Getting Started with Meditation:
FAQs about the Online Course

How will we be spending our time together on Zoom?

Each class will feature a mix of guided meditation, small group sharing & discussion, a little bit of lecture, and open Q&A. We will keep things interactive and participatory - it’s the best way to learn! Expect a heavy focus on practice, so that you discover the concepts for yourself.

I’ve never meditated before in my life. Is this course for me?

Sure! All that’s required is an interest in meditating - nothing more. (For this reason, if you already have a consistent meditation practice, you may find some of the course content familiar.)

What types of meditation will we be learning?

We’ll be learning a variety of mindfulness meditation techniques, which are designed to bring us out of our heads and into the present moment. Specific meditations include:
• Breath meditation
• The body scan - a means of becoming more aware of physical sensations in the body
• Walking meditation
• Mindfulness of thoughts
• Compassion meditation
• Gratitude meditation
• Interpersonal meditation

Will I meditate outside of the course?

Yes. In order to benefit fully from the course, participants will be asked to meditate regularly in between classes. Guided audio meditations are provided for this purpose. We recommend the “5/5/5” approach -- meditating 5+ minutes a day, 5 days a week, for 5 weeks. Do this and you’ll have a healthy new habit!

Is there homework?

Other than meditating, no. Readings and materials will be provided, but these are all optional.

Is mindfulness related to Buddhism? If so, will it conflict with my religious beliefs (or lack of them)?

Mindfulness is a key component of Buddhism, and many of the meditation techniques studied through modern science come from this tradition. However, meditation is taught through a secular lens in this course. We approach it as a mind-body skill, and emphasize the scientific underpinning and benefits of these practices. Research shows that these benefits are accessible to anyone interested in more presence, perspective and self-knowledge, no matter one's spiritual or religious beliefs.

Is meditation useful for my medical condition?

Research suggests that meditation is useful treatment for a variety of physical and mental conditions, including chronic pain, depression, anxiety, and blood pressure. You can learn more about the potential influence of meditation for specific conditions here.

How many folks will be taking the course?

Enrollment will be capped at 15 people for this course. In addition, we’ll be making frequent use of small groups (i.e. Zoom breakout rooms) to further nurture a sense of intimacy and connection.

I’m broke. Can I still participate in the course?

Yes! Times are tough for so many of us right now. If you’re currently without income, please donate whatever you can through PayPal (including nothing at all) when signing up through the registration form. It will be a joy to have you in the course.

How do I register for the course?

You can register here.

I have a question that's not listed here. Where do I turn?

Just email Vince! He's at vince.lampone (at) gmail (dot) com.
